Oswald The Lucky Rabbit

Fig 3.1 Oswald The Lucky Rabbit in Trolley Troubles

Fig 3.2 Oswald The Lucky Rabbit in Mickey Mouse Shorts (2013)

Oswald is basically a Mickey Mouse before Mickey Mouse. This cartoon character is one of the first cartoon character that have a "Personality Animation". Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was often to be depicted as a energetic, courageus, and haughty rabbit that led to the adveturous story. At that time, most of the cartoon character doesnt have a personality and the personalized cartoon character it's new and excited at that time. The character tends to make a viewer's laugh by doing a "slapstick".

Oswald character design look is very cheerful and iconic. he have a shorts, big foot like a rabbit, and an ear that he can use to fly. We can see how cute is Oswald design, that make very loveable to viewer's at that time. This character design is feel very simple and iconic with black and white color. With this black and white color Oswald The Lucky Rabbit is very resemble charlie chaplin. Even, what character act is very similiar with charlie chaplin. The character shapes is really simple with a circle stomach with a short pants in it, fluffy tail. and simple leg.

Oswald The Lucky Rabbit Face is very similiar with a Mickey Mouse early design. They even have a same traits, like a shorts, black and white, the face shapes, etc. With that face shapes, it makes Oswald The Lucky Rabbit appear to be expressive. Oswald's flying ear is inspired by a trend that Felix The Cat make (Tails that can turn into a stick). His ears is very iconic at that time, Oswald as a rabbit too is what makes this character unique because most of cartoon character at that time is a cat. We can say Oswald The Lucky Rabbit is one of the pioneers of cartoon stars that have a specific charactersictics.

Django Unchained
Fig 5.1 Django Unchained Scene

Django Unchained (2012) is a western/drama movie that set in the 2 years before american civil war. This movie is about a Germany bounty hunter that free a slave and help him to free his wife from a brutal plantation-owner in Mississipi. Django is a freed slave and working as bounty hunter and this scene is when django try to freed his wife from the salvation.

This chiarascuro scene is in his movie about 30 minutes before the ending. This scene is very dramatic because, this is scene is when the antagonist in this movie threatened django to shot his wife if his not surender. This scene is very bittersweet because, after he's wife got free from a slavery he must get out from the antagonist house. The friend of Django (Germany bounty hunter) also died because, he pissed off with how the antagonist character act with his slave and the germany bounty hunter shot him but, his got shot too by the antagonist employee.

The lightning on this scene is very dramatic, the light that outshine and highlighting Django to make dramatic feels to the viewer's eyes. We can see the main character is feel uncertrain about what he gonna decide. His wife is about to get shot but, the wife is telling him to let her go. And Django has to make the decision in this scene. The film maker is wants to highlight Django. we can see the background and the light that highlight django is very contrast to the background. This scene is not like the most important scene in this movie but for me this scene is quite important.

The simple composition in this movie make the scene is felt more dramatic to the viewer's eyes at least for my eyes. The camera is very stable and doesn't do a extreme movie to shot this scene. I learn how charascuro works in the movie with this scene. I can observe the movie and more attention to the detail when i watch this movie. I watch this movie likes three times already and four this time. I feel when i attention with the lighting detail in this movie i realize how masterpiece this movie is. this movie use so many charascuro technique in this movie from beggining. Most of the time when i watch the movie i didn't attention to the lighting or anything but, because of this task i know how important it is.

The uses of lighting on this movie is reflect how this scene is work in this movie. the lighting is make more clear what happening in this scene. With attentinonin to the charascuro technique, i feel i want to observe more movies. I pick Django Unchained for this lecture report because i love this movie ( Big fan of Quentin Tarantino movies). Now i wondering how the lighting is makin a feeling on a scene more felt to the viewers. so that's it my lecture report for this week. thank you

Vormator Challange

Design and create one unique character by using the given sets of shapes. Start with a rough sketch of your character and then use adobe Illustrator to create the final design. Think wacky, think creative. Think of stylized designs that truly reflect your imagination!

Ideas
My ideas for this vormator challange is to make a character that the design is based/inspired by classic 1920s - 1930s cartoon character. I want to make a character like 20s-30s character because, The 1920s-30s character look so simple but very iconic to me.

Character Development
So after i get the reference i jump right away to Adobe Illustrator. I do it without doing a sketching, i know its make the process looks not good but, whatever i do it on illustrator immediately.

Fig 4.1 First Design

This is my first design. I'm trying to make a kangaroo character and with the ear and tail like that it's pretty resemble the humanoid kangaroo. I show this character design to Ms. Anis and she gave me an advice for my character design. She said my character is lacks of expression, make the hand and leg size even, try to make the ears and the tails round as the whole shape of this character is round, and don't add the outline to the overalls.

Fig 4.2 Second Design

After i do the revision that Ms. Anis gave me this is the result of the design. I change the ear shape to more rounded shapes. i add the mouth too on this character, and i remove the overalls and tails of the character. But, i dont satisfied with this character design so i make so improvement on this.

Fig 4.3 Third Design

I dont like the mouth of the design before because it doesnt feel natural on this character. So i change the mouth shape. To make this kind of mouth shape with the shape that they gave me it's quite tricky and take a lot of time haha. I ask to Ms. Anis again what can i do to make character looks better. She said try to add the overalls again. And i feel this character too similiar with Oswald The Lucky Rabbit.

Fig 4.4 Fourth Design

I decide to change the character species from a rabbit to a weasel. I change the ear shape to a weasel ear look alike to resembles more weasel. So, when someone see it they know it's a weasel. I add back the overalls to the character. I add the button to the character too. I make a reflection to the eyes and the nose.
