The first writing system evolved from a counting technology the token system, or "Record Keeping Before Writing" Bullae,

Ancient Egypt

fig 2

Back in ancient Egypt, it was the scribes who could understand and put down hieroglyphics. They'd scribble their stuff on this special paper called papyrus, but they also liked doodling on tomb walls for fun.

Han-Chinese Civilzation

Back in the day, they wrote Chinese characters in vertical columns, so a slim bamboo strip worked great for a single column. They'd link these strips with threads to make longer sheets, and it's cool how a bunch of bamboo strips strung together turned into the modern Chinese character for a book.

fig 3

The very first printed book, the Diamond Sutra, came to life in 868 CE, and it's a Chinese creation from the late T'ang dynasty. They found it in a cave in Dunhuang in 1899, and it's a scroll-style book printed on paper. Paper itself was invented way back around 179-41 BCE.

European civilization

fig 5

Between 197 and 159 BC, Turkey was the birthplace of parchment, which later made its way to Europe. Animal hide is used to make parchment. Scrolls could be made from papyrus and bamboo, but leather was too thick and heavy, making it impossible. Europeans began producing parchment books around the year 50 AD

Mockup Making

We have to make a mockup book in the class. This exercise is given for helping us to decide our book size. The book had to be between A4 and A5. The size that i test are:

1. 170mm x 240mm

2. 150mm x 220mm

3. 145mm x 210mm

Reflection

Creating a book mockup by cutting paper and assembling it has provided me with a fresh and insightful perspective on the intricacies of book design. This hands-on experience has allowed me to intimately grasp the physicality, layout, and user experience aspects of books, which will undoubtedly inform and enhance my approach to design in a profound way.
