Excersise 1: Elements & Principles of Design, Gestalt Theory & Contrast

Gestalt Theory & Contrast

We met Dr. Pouline our lecturer for the first time at our campus. She briefed us about our module for these next 14 weeks. Dr. Pouline told us to watch 2 video that she uploaded on teams. Those videos explain us about the introduction of principles of design, contrast, and gestalt theory.

In the first video Dr. Jinchi explain us a elements of design and principle of design. Elements of design is point, line, shape, form, texture, space, colour. Principle of design is contrast, balance, emphasis, rules of third, repetition/patterns, movements, alignments, hierarchy, unity, propotion

In the second video Dr. Jinchi explain us about contrast and gestalt theory. Contrast is a something that very different from other else. Contrast could be very different color, patterns, shape, etc. Gestalt theory is a theory that makes a complex scene to a simpler scene and make human eye perceive the visual elements of the design.

Summary
Contrast
Contrast is the juxtaposition of strongly dissimiliar elements. Without contrast, visual experience would be monotonous. Contrast can provide visual interest, emphasise a point and express content. We can see contrast in everywhere like in the movie, web design, creative work, a poster, etc.

Figure 2.1 IT (2017) Come float scene

as we can see the baloon is stand out in this scene. Because, The red color of this baloon is very bright and the background color is pretty dull. So, it's make the baloon stand out more.

Fig 2.2 Spotify Log in page

Here's another example of contrast on spotify log in page. because of the white color on log in button, you will know where is the login button on this page.

Gestalt Theory
In german "gestalt" refers to "shape" or "form". The human brain is wired to see a patterns, logic, and structure.

Gestalt principles are the rules that showed us how human eye can perceives the visual elements. These principles target is to capture a complex scene and make it more simple shapes. These principles also aim to illustrate how human eyes can perceive the shapes as a single form rather that seperated simple elements involved.

Idea Exploration

I started looking the idea for the contrast concept design and make a sketch.
Figure 4.3 Sketch of contrast theory design

So the left one sketch is i try to make a remake of kung fu hustle movie poster and the right one i try to make a design of the will smith slap chris rock tragedy. Out of those 2 design i decide to continue my work with the kung fu hustle one

4.4 Kung Fu Hustle Poster Remake Contrast Theory

This is a remake of kung fu hustle movie. So i made the silhouette of axe gang's leader black and the background is axe gang's member. I make the movie title and background silhouette red so the silhouette of axe gang's leader is stand out in this poster.

4.5 Sketch of Gestalt Theory

So the left one i try to remake Rocky movie poster. The middle and the right one i try to make fight club movie poster remake. After i attend a consultation with Dr. Pouline, she recommends me to use the right design for my gestalt theory.

4.6 Fight Club Poster Remake Gestalt Theory

For this design i use figure ground gestalt theory. the left one is Brad Pitt silhouette and the left one is Edward Norton silhouette.

SPOILER ALERT
This movie is about a person(Edward Norton) who find his life is boring and then he met a stranger(Brad Pitt) and those 2 became a friend. these two people make a fight club but the club become more serious cult and start terrorizing people. After all of it, turns out that the brad pitt's character is Edward norton's character imaginary friends and he do this all alone.

Feedback

Week 2
I was pretty nervous when i gonna show my work to Ms. Pouline but, it turns out that Ms. Pouline like my work. I gave her two design of figure ground gestalt theory and one design of contrast theory. She told me that i better use fig 5.4 as my design for the gestalt theory design. For the contrast it's pretty safe and Ms. Pouline approve my work.

Reflection

Week 2
I really learn a lot of basic design principles in this excersise. I think gestalt theory and contrast theory is quite important to learn for a new designer like me. There are few thinks that I hope i could improve and i hope i could improve on the next excersise. But overall, I quite satisfied with my work.
