Excersise 3: Harmony, Unit, Symbol, Word & Image

Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Word & Image

This week we have to watch pre-recorder lecture 4 & 5. On pre-recorded lecture 4 Ms. Jinchi explain to us about Harmony & Unity. In this video i learn that harmony is the principles that had to have an elements that share a common trait. With combining a similiar element in the design such as similiar shape, adjacent color, and related texture it gave the design satisfying effect. Without variety and contrast, harmony become monotony. Besides harmony, I learn about Unity too. Unity is when you make a design and compose the elements in such way giving a sense of oneness. To achieve the unity we have to composed the design with sense of stability, how you arrange it.

In Video 5 we learn about Symbol & Word & Image. From what i learn, Symbol is a sign, a shape, or object that represent something else. In design, symbol can provide or convey an information. equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story. Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users or viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. Choosing the right words to pair with imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the design

Fig 1.1 Type of Symbol

Pictorial Symbol
Image related and simplified pictures. They have their usage in conveying massage.

Abstract Symbol
Can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.

Arbitrary symbols
Have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent. Invented and constructed. Many are based on geometric shapes and colours.

Idea Exploration
Progress

Fig 6.1 Failed Design 1

So, i've been strugling in this excersise. maybe, becuase i dont understand the harmony and unity really well. Fig 6.1 is my first design for harmony. I go to the consultation with Ms. Pouline and her feedback is i can do better that this. So, I make a new one

Fig 6.2 Failed Design 2

I go to another consultation with Ms. Pouline. She said this design are not resemble the harmony design principles. I've been thinking really hard what should i make. So, i take a break while public holiday and i got the idea to make a symbol.

Fig 6.2 Modern Barong

So, i make this symbol to represent the culture in bali. Bali is very cultural island in Indonesia but, we all know how the night life work in there. so i make a barong art but, i gave it a modern color. I think i'll go with this design.

Fig 6.3 Compass shoes design 1

I show this web design to Ms. Pouline. She gave me a feedback and she said what if i just make a design with a nice tagline as the word on the design. So, I make this

Fig 6.4 Compass Shoes Design

So compass is a local shoes brand in Indonesia. This shoes brand it used for lower class people. So, i try to make it more classy with the word and design.

Feedback

Week 4
I attend the online feedback session with Ms. Pouline this week. I show my "Milo Rebrand" work to Ms. Pouline and she thinks my design is too simple and doesn't resemble the theory of harmony. because, I only use three colour on this design. Ms. Pouline said, this design it;s not like my how i design from a couple weeks ago and she said, it's better for me to take a break and looking for idea because, right now it's public holiday.

Week 5
I go back to campus and do the feedback session with Ms. Pouline. I show her the new design for my harmony theory and one other design for my word & image design. Once again, Ms. Pouline said that my design not resemble the harmony theory, I guess i'm a bit struggle in this excersise. For the Word & Image I make a web design for shoes. Ms Pouline said, I limit myself with a design that have to be on media such as poster design, web design, etc. She said, i could make a design with forgetting about that.

Reflection

From this excersise, I feel that I little bit struggling to understanding the theory of harmony. On the feedback session with Ms. Pouline really ope my mind about my design. I think itls true that I limit myself if always do poster design or web design or rebranding a thing. I learn that making a design it doesn't have to be a thing. I'm going to explore this idea even more.
