Lectures

On video Lec 7_vid_sense_of_place we learn how important observing on designin is. Observing before designing is very important because with observing we can translate our observing to a design. Being observant is mean we have to aware of our surrounding, pay attention to the details, etc.

Fig 1.1 8 Ways to Improve Your Power of Observation

Dr. Jinchi gave us a video to improve our observing skills.

To create sense of place design we have to think about places that we have been, create a lasting memories, etc.

Visual Research

Fig 3.1 Sense of Place Example #1

I find it that sense of place design always be something abstract, colourful, or expressive. In this example Fig 3,1 it shows the use of colours to express the mood in the design. I can see how the designer use the color on the design, The designer must be want the viewers to feel the cheer and excitement when they see this design.

Fig 3.2 Sense of Place Example #2

Here.s another example of sense of place. I can feel the abstract idea on this design. I mean, fishes floating in the town it's kinda random right haha. The designer use the similiarity idea in this design.

Fig 3.3 Sense of PLace Example #3

After all colourful designs that i got for sense of place finally i got less colourful sense of place design. The designers use chiaroscuro principles on this design. We can see the contrast, how the designer use black and white colour to make an contrast in this art.

Progress and Idea Exploration

After i see the reference for this "sense of place" project, i see almost every design is like an abstract or something really detailed. So, i try to make something simple but i have to make sure that if someone see my design like "okay this is sense of place" haha.

I try to remember what is the most comfy place and the first thing that comes to my mind actually my bedroom but, i think it's what normal people think. So, i try to find something more different and i start to think what the other comfy place beside bathroom and them light bulb in the head taraaa "Toilet!!".

and the i start to making my design on photoshop.

Fig 4.5 Colour Psychology

I learn about colour pyschology and i try to translate it to my design.

Fig 4.6 Portable Toilet #2

So, I change the colour of design and here i gonna explain and breakdown the purpose of it.

Design Breakdown

Green Coloured box
I learn that green is a nature in a colour psychology. So when i put the green colour in the box i think that going the toilet and do some business in there (haha) it"s the most natural things that human do. It's a basic human needs.

Sealed Package
If i come to the toilet i feel like "okay, this is very chill and safe. So, thats why i put a sealed on it, so it's like no one gonns disturb me i sealed this place.

Two Tissues
The Tissues is for wiping right? So evertime i come to the toilet and take a s***t, i wipe and just forget my problem for a second, a minute, an hour to just focused on what im doing in the toilet.

Coloured Wall
So the colour on the wall is a stages of process when you go to the toilet. Yellow is the warning before you go to the toilet, its like o ow i feel something hahaha, and then red is like the climax of, it like an urgent things to do and sure we have to do it ASAP, And then the green colour is the start like, you know in traffic light green light means that you have to move right? so its like that you have to do it, and the blue colour is express the relief like "ouuu finally",

Black Coloured behind The Closet
So i put the black coloured in that to make it feel like a deep really deep. i make it like that cause when human go to the toilet it's a really-really personal time. So, i make it like very deep personal time. Me timeee.

Portable Toilet
I make it portable toilet because u can bring it everywhere haha.

Feedback

Ms. Pouline said my design looks fine to her but, she start to questioning what is the purpose of the details on my design, Like "Why you put the black wall on the design?", ""What is the the meaning of those colourful walls?", "Why you making it seems like sealed?" and i barely cannot answered the question. I was like "uhh ahh uu aa" (Struggled to answer the question voice haha). And then after i struggled to answered the question Dr. Pouline start to gave me a pep talk like, " You have to find the meaning on the design!!", "Your design must have the purpose!!". And okay let's goooo i try to find the meaning of the design. BTW, Dr. Pouline if you read this you really encourage me no kidding

Reflection

I really learn a lot to put a meaning on my design. I learn that design has to have a meaning and purpose behind it and it's make the design is different and special. If i make the design without a meaning everybody can do it, there are no special things on my design. But, I feel the message in the design cannot be biggger than a design. Because, I feel the main purpose it's still a design not the message.
