Excersise 2: Emphasis, Balance, Repetition, Movement

Emphasis, Balance, Repetition, and Movement

I watch the lecture video 2 & 3 on the teams. In these video i learn about balance, emphasis, rules of third, and the golden ratio and also repetition & movement. These lessons is very interesting because all of this idea connect with each others. There are 3 variants of balance, there is symmetrical, assymetrical and sometimes radial. To make an emphasis we can do it with colour, contrast, scale, shape, perspective, and placement. Also, in this video we learn about how to use a golden ratio and rules of third.

On the video 3 i learn about repetition and movements principles. Repetition principle is about making a design by reusing same or similiar aspects and elements. Using this principles will a unity, cohesiveness, and consistency on the design. Movement elements potray the changing place, direction, orientation. Movement design principles is used to guide the viewer's eye on the design.

Summary & Visual Research

Emphasis
Emphasis is an idea of design that catches viewer's attention. Usually the design will be one area stand out than the other area and the area usually in different size, color, shapes, etc.

Fig 2.1 Emphasis Example 1

We can see the emphasis on this photograph. Because the red umberella very stand and the other umberella just black, the viewer eyes will see the red umberella first.

Fig 2.2 Emphasis Examples 2

We definitely can see the emphasis on this movie poster. We can see Dory, Martin, and Nemo are in the different color and shapes in this poster and because of that the viewer's eyes will see Dory, Martin, Nemo character first

Balance
Balance is refers to the distribution of visual weight in a design. It's a the weight of the elements that causes the design to be balanced. Also, balance can be symmetrical or asymetrical.

Symmetrical Balance
Symmetrical balance always has an equal weight on the equal sides. The equal placements of elements it the central axis (it could be horizontal or vertical). Approximate symmetry is when equivalent but not identical forms are arranged around fulcrym line.

Fig 3.1 Symmetrical Balance example

We can see on this design. These design have 2 exactly same counterparts from one side and the other side.

Fig 3.2 Approximate Symmetrical Balance Example

For this one, We can see the 2 sides of this design is very similiar but we can spot the difference in it.

Assymetrical Balance
Assymetrical balance is an unequal visual weight on each side composition. The dominan element might be in one side of the composition and which could be balanced by couple more lesser or focal points.

Fig 3.3 Assymetrical Balance example 1

This is an example of assymetrical balance on the interior design. we can see the photos make one side heavier but somehow the other space make it balance.

Fig 3.4 Assymetrical Balance example 2

This another example of assymetrical balance. This design only using a title and skateboarder on top of this design but, the blank space in below of the main object make it good on viewer's eyes.

Repetition
Repetition is design principles that use the same object, aspects or elements and make the design become unity, cohessive, and consistent.

Fig 4.1 Repetition Example 1

This the exmaple of repetition, This design using a repetition principles to make the design look consistent and cohessive.

Fig 4.2 Repetition Example 2

This coca cola ads using a repetition to make a unity in it. We can see the designer using a coca cola bottle to make a simle.

Movements
Movements principle is about potraying a the movement into a design so, the viewer's can feel and see the guide of the design.

Fig 5.1 Movements Example 1

The design creating a illusion to the viewers that the design is moving. We can see the movement of this design from top to bottom.

Fig 5.2 Movements example 2

This design use psychadelic effect to create a movement illusion. it make our eyes follow the illusion on the design.

Idea Exploration
Balance Design Progress

Fig 6.1 First Balance Sketches

My first idea for balance design was create a balance using a golden ratio theory. But, after i sketch the design i'm not satisfied with the result of this sketches so, i change my mind and decided to make a design for magazine cover. I strart planning and drawing on my ipad for the design.

Fig 6.2 Balance design planning

After i do the planning, i draw a pose on that planning design and transfer it to the photoshop. I trasnfer it to the photoshop because i want to add the text, the flower, and the texture to the design.

Fig 6.3 Balance design's main object

After i transfer my drawing above on photoshop, i start to add the flower, the text, and the texture. And this is the result of my design after i work on it on photoshop

Fig 6.4 "Passion = Lies" before revised

On the consultation day, Dr. Pouline said it was fine but she think the design is gonna look better if i remove the "2020" text and the title and i can adjust the text and barcode in it. So, i listen to Dr. Pouline advice and removing the title and "2022" text.

Emphasis Design Progress
For the emphasis design i try to make a design with a different approach. I want to make a design of packaging of a product and make the product stand out. I start to find a reference on pinterest and i found this packaging design.
Fig 7.1 "Corella" Meat Packaging

I try to explore the idea and start questioning "what if i highlighted the meat and the meat i change it to salmon fillet". So i start to make a drawing a salmon silhouette with the transparent hole in the salmon belly.
Fig 7.2 Salmon Silhouette Drawing

After i draw a silhouette of salmon, i transfer it to photoshop so i can make a packaging box out of it. In the photoshop i add the packaging title, real photo of salmon fillet, some text, paper texture, and plastic texture.

Fig 7.3 Atlantic Salmon Fillet Design - 1

So this is the result of the design. But i'm not quite sure if this design is emphasis enough or not so, i make one another design just in case this salmon design is not emphasis design. I try to remake Chow Yun-Fat's God of Gambler movie. So i try to draw the Poker card.

Fig 7.4 God of Gambler poker card drawing

And again, i transfer it to photoshop to add some details in it.

Fig 7.5 God of Gambler Poster remake

On the consultation day, i got a feedback from Dr. Pouline about my design. She like my "Atlantic Salmon Fillet" Design and she prefer me to continue with my that design. Dr. Pouline said the reason is my "Atlantic Salmon Fillet" Design more smarter than "God of Gambler Poster Remake" Design.

After i do the consultation with Dr. Pouline i start to look at my "Atlantic Salmon Fillet" design again and i'm not satisfied with it so, i try to touch up a design a little bit and add some details in the design.

Feedback

Week 3
I show my work to Ms. Pouline on week 3 feedback session. She said she really like my work especially the "Atlantic Salmon Fillet" one. She said it's smart how i apply the theory to the design. For the balance design "Passion = Lies" she said, she likes how i combine the realistic photo to my design and she likes that my design not only just a sketch.

Reflection

Week 3
In this excersise I learn about the design theory of emphasis, balance, repetition, and movement. But besides that, I learn to see a different perspective in this excersise, which I think it;s really important for me to see a design from a different angle and perspective to translate it into my art.
